Nu när Brontësystrarnas böcker filmatiseras som till exempel Svindlande höjder så lär de snart få samma höga profil som Jane Austen i det allmänna medvetandet. Dels för böckerna, men också för sina levnadsöden som man kan läsa mer om i den här lite sensationalistiska artikeln. (Bland annat var både Charlotte på bilden oven och Emily tidiga fantasyförfattare). Det har också utkristalliserat sig en sorts skiljelinje mellan det förnuftiga, odlade, kultiverade och intellektuella (Austen) och det naturliga, vilda, känslostyrda och mystiska, eller som en kommentator kallar det för, Yorkshire gothic, som systrarna Brontë anses stå för:

”The Brontes’ work is Yorkshire Gothic, a gothic where the land is alive and with an awareness that is far older than Christianity. // You will never understand the Brontes until you understand what it means to live near the West Yorkshire moorlands: to live amongst the mist, the constant smell of peat everywhere, the bleakness, the utter sense of isolation, the way things sound, the dampness, the moss on the stone, the old roman roads, the cuppings in the stones, the henges, the ring stones, and you will never truly understand unless you spend time here in a house that is old.”
